For a long time, Bengal had only one Government affiliated film school in the state and that was the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) run under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.
The students who wanted to go for film studies had to either apply at SRFTI, failing which they had to travel to either Mumbai or Pune.
However, from 2019 the scenario has changed. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), has launched West Bengal’s first state affiliated film course. The students need not now travel to other states if they want to pursue an under-graduation or post-graduation course in film studies.
MAKAUT in association with iLEAD (Institute of Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Development), has started a Film and TV production degree course both as an under-graduate and post-graduate degree with state of the art studios, latest equipment and 100% placement assistance.
The undergraduate students in film studies can pursue their honors in various disciplines that includes cinematography, script writing, sound direction, visual effects and production design.
As per the curriculum, the core advantageous things that the students will get to learn at iLEAD are —
• The course will give an in depth idea about visual language
• Script writing and story boarding are included. Additionally, software application in screen writing will also be taught.
• Students will be given opportunity to attend motion capture handling workshop
• Audiography, sound design along with digital editing techniques through software will be taught.

• Encouraging film making with zero budget, the course will also make the students shoot guerilla films of 5 minutes on any relevant current social topic.

• An internship in real world production for 3 months is also compulsory for all the students.
• Students also will get to practice hands on cinematography, editing and sound technologies.
The course at both under graduate and post graduate level is completely practice oriented and prepares the students for the real film making world. Practical classes on audio design, VFX breakdown, edit flow, script breakdown are conducted with the in-house facilities and world class infrastructure.
The film school at iLEAD affiliated by MAKAUT also gives an introduction to students about AR/AI film making. The application of artificial intelligence in the process of film making and also to understand the target audience of a film is increasingly becoming a popular trend. Contextual studies, music studies, world cinema, audience and viewership studies, IMAX production, 3D and Real 3D are also part of the curriculum in the under-graduate level only.
